HBCA Assumes Management of Coopers Green Hall
On November 17, more than 30 community members gathered to celebrate the formal transfer of Coopers Green Hall management from the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to the Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCA). The event marked the culmination of more than a decade of advocacy and community effort to secure the hall’s future at Coopers Green.
HBCA hall committee chair Don Cunliffe opened the celebration with a handcrafted “giant key,” symbolizing the hall’s handover and the community’s renewed stewardship. The milestone follows years of discussions, shifting plans for a replacement hall, and strong support from HBCA members for a new 10-year renewable licence to occupy.
SCRD Halfmoon Bay Area Director Justine Gabias, who carried out the ceremonial handover, praised the association’s leadership and volunteerism: “I can’t wait to see what you do to this building to breathe new life into it, to make us more connected.”
An initial refresh of the hall—starting with upgrades such as kitchen improvements funded through a Community Forest grant—will begin shortly, with more extensive renovations planned over time. Community volunteers will play a key role in shaping the hall’s next chapter.
Among the first upcoming community uses is an all-ages participation dance on November 29, featuring live folk music and taught dances.
