Environmentally Important Sites and Streams on the Sunshine Coast
(Report Received by the SCRD Feb 25, 1998)
The Sunshine Coast, particularly along Highway 101, is one of the fastest growing parts of the province, yet it still retains many viable fish streams and areas of natural value. The goal of this project Identification and Mapping of Streams and Environmentally Important Sites, conducted from early-1996 to mid-1997, was to assist local groups in prioritizing and protecting
natural areas they believe to be important fish and wildlife habitat on the Sunshine Coast. It addresses the need for more complete and presentable information by:
- capturing local natural history knowledge from members of the community:
- consolidating existing stream and inventory work to make it more publicly accessible;
- gathering additional biophysical information through field work;
- producing a poster-size, educational map of streams and environmentally important sites on the Sunshine Coast; and
- working with community groups, local government and government agencies to develop strategies for protecting important natural areas.
The 61 environmentally important sites presented here were nominated by residents of the Sunshine Coast, who provided their knowledge of each site on a nomination form. A field ecologist gathered additional biophysical inventory information on the sites, and a range of protection mechanisms were suggested for each site. All of this information and other site data were compiled in a database and linked to a geographic information system for use as planning tool by local government and government agencies.
