Our geologist on the job, Peter Hews, reports on the latest SCRD board discussions regarding the relocation of the Sunshine Coast Landfill.
“Some “breaking news” from the SCRD that we might like to update our members with.: In order to eke out a little more time for the Sechelt landfill and decrease GHG emissions, as of Nov. 1 all food waste and recyclable paper will be banned from the landfill. If you’re recycling at home this likely won’t affect you, but it will apply to businesses and institutions, including restaurants.
The SCRD have reported that they may be able to extend the life of the Sechelt landfill by another three years by relocating the contact water pond. This potentially gives the SCRD another three years to plan their next steps and decide whether to pursue a new landfill site in the Halfmoon Bay area or implement the idea of exporting solid waste off the Sunshine Coast.”
